Anacortes History

  1. The Moore House Hospital goes up in flames (1928)

    November 16, 2022, All Day

Patients of the city’s hospital had their recuperation interrupted on this date in 1928, when a chimney fire leveled the building. The structure started its life in 1891 as the beautiful Victorian J.M. Moore home on the northeast corner of 32nd and M. It changed hands many times before ending up under the ownership of Anacortes physicians and surgeons in 1923, five years later the structure would be ablaze. Luckily, the Lowman family was more than willing to lend their household as a temporary location for the hospital until funds were raised for a more professional "fireproof" hospital, which opened in June 1930. Betty Lowman later wrote of finding needles in her post-hospital house, and of friends not wanting to come over to a house still reeking of anesthetic and bad memories.
