The tree well structure performed as designed. What we found was the roots made their way between the top off the root barrier and the bottom of the sidewalk, which created the heave in the panels.
We removed the tree and root ball. The root ball measured in at 4’x4’x 2.5’. Schwetz Construction had a pre-made tree box that was manufactured years ago when Schwetz reconstructed 5 blocks of the Commercial corridor under the CBD Sidewalk Replacement Project. They installed a new tree aeration-water system within the tree well and backfilled the box with topsoil.
Yesterday, we work diligently to find a new frame for the tree grates. We had to do a little modification to the new frame to allow for a good fit of the tree grates to ensure we did not end up with a trip hazard when the project was complete.
The tree will be planted on Tuesday. We want to provide enough cure time on the concrete.
